Depuis l'antiquité, ce promontoire rocheux a permis de contrôler la navigation sur l'estuaire de la gironde et par là même Bordeaux. Fortifié par les romains, château fort au moyen age et citadelle en 1685 sous la direction de Vauban. Site classé au patrimoine mondial en 2008
